Choosing and Caring for Exterior Wood

Natural wood, fitted to your home

A wood porch ceiling changes the feel of an entrance without changing the whole exterior. We work with cedar and pine for porch ceilings, beam wraps, posts, trim, and accents, and we offer mahogany shutters and porch ceilings. We help choose details that suit the house and the way the space is used.

Choosing the wood for the location

We start by looking at how much sun and rain the wood will get. A covered ceiling, an exposed post and a shutter each need a little different planning. Pine needs protection wherever moisture could linger. Cedar’s natural resistance to decay depends on the species and how much heartwood, the inner part of the tree, is in the board. Cypress is another option, with durability that also depends on the material selected.

For custom work, we offer Eastern Red Cedar, Hickory and White Oak. We can source almost any species, as long as it’s available and a good fit for the spot. Hickory is hard, but that doesn’t mean it resists outdoor decay, so we consider it for protected details. If you’re interested in mahogany, we’ll check the actual species before recommending it outdoors. Woods sold as mahogany can hold up differently.

Finishing and caring for real wood

Wood takes in and releases moisture, so we give it time to adjust to its surroundings and leave room for movement. We also plan for drainage, protect exposed ends and choose a finish suited to the weather. Clear-looking finishes and paint offer different protection from moisture and sunlight. A sheltered porch ceiling will generally need different care from shutters out in the weather.

Finding the right boards

We can look locally, too. Building Supply Center in Pensacola lists Southern yellow pine, cedar siding and tongue-and-groove ceiling options. Lumber Locators in Santa Rosa Beach lists white oak, cypress and custom milling. We’ll confirm the wood, grade, sizes and availability for your project before making plans around it.

Bring us your idea, whether it's one porch ceiling or a set of coordinated wood details, and we'll help work through the material and finish choices.
